MD 17 over Potomac River, C&O Canal and CSXT Railroad Bridge Rehabilitation. Brunswick, Maryland.

The rehabilitation of Bridge No. 1002400 included the structural and maintenance repairs to bridge components in order to extend the service live of this Potomac River crossing.

Bridge No. 1002400 was built in 1955 and consists of a 2,400 foot long, 20 span steel girder bridge carrying MD 17 over the Potomac River, C&O Canal, and CSXT Railroad, connecting Brunswick, Maryland and Lovettsville, Virginia. Structural repairs included strengthening of existing floor beams, structural steel plating repairs to the existing girders, floor beams, floor beam corbel brackets, stringers, lateral bracing, and stiffener plates, and the jacking and replacement of the existing rocker bearings. Maintenance repairs included modification to the existing roadway joints, installation of new drainage troughs under the roadway joints, installation of a pigeon netting in the spans over local roadways and houses. Cleaning and painting of the structural steel, rehabilitation of the concrete curbs, and installing a new asphalt overlay was coordinated by Maryland State Highway Administration.
