Five Points Transportation Study. Sussex County, DE.

In the heart of Delaware’s beach resorts and their summer traffic, this study sets the bar for stakeholder engagement in comprehensive transportation and land use studies.

The Delaware Department of Transportation and Sussex County joined forces to tackle transportation and land use issues at the gateway to the Delaware beaches. Given the controversy surrounding past transportation projects in the area, a consultant team led by WRA developed and facilitated an inclusive stakeholder engagement process to build a broad base of support. Monthly meetings of a 16-member working group, along with ample opportunities for participation by the general public, formed the core of that plan. The working group identified transportation and land use needs, developed ideas to address those needs, and voted to adopt 78 recommendations for DelDOT and the County. These recommendations, which range from relatively inexpensive, easily implemented fixes to large, long-range projects, are expected to form the core of DelDOT’s capital program in this area.
