Dry Dock 12. Newport News, Virginia.

Designed by WRA for use with both US Navy and commercial vessels, Dry Dock 12 is one of the largest dry docks in the world.

Construction of Dry Dock 12 required a 120-acre dredge and fill reclamation. Upon completion of the dock extension, the overall length is at 2173 feet and 250 feet wide. The dock extension was constructed in the dry within existing yard fill, and the dock walls were designed to resist full hydrostatic pressure utilizing prestressed concrete cylinder piles.  The dock floor was designed with an active pressure relief system.   Intermediate gates allow flexibility for partially flooding of the basin.  The facility has successfully docked, overhauled, constructed, and launched specialized vessels such as aircraft carriers, submarines, LNG carriers, offshore tankers, passenger ships, and ultra large crude carriers.  WRA has provided continuous support for certification of this dock to U.S. Navy standards.
