Collington Square Elementary/Middle School. Baltimore City Public Schools, Maryland.

The transformation of an outdated space resulted in an enjoyable, modern learning environment while addressing the specific needs of the school system.

WRA’s design for a new 4,300 SF media center turned a dark, uninviting space with water-damaged ceiling tiles into a bright, lively space featuring new furniture, finishes and specialized areas. Two adjacent unused classrooms were opened to create more square footage within the media center. The design included new finishes, furnishings and custom millwork, two rooftop units for HVAC, and new energy efficient lighting to complement the existing and ample natural daylighting.

Architecture

The entry to the new space provides a welcoming appearance with full light doors. The design features a computer work area, reading area with child-friendly furnishings, and a workroom for the librarian. An inviting, curved nook provides comfortable group reading sessions.

Interior Design

The design included new custom millwork computer stations and librarian’s desk. A decorative gridwork was hung from the underside of the ceiling. Fun, vinyl tile covers the floor in a curvy pattern and the wall paint complements the design. All finishes were blue and gold to support the spirit of the school’s colors.
