Centre Area Transportation Authority PA Facility Complex. State College, Pennsylvania.

Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) needed to address the transit needs of the expanding community and ridership growth at State College, Penn State University and three surrounding townships.

The original facilities constructed for CATA were no longer sufficient, so CATA hired a design team to plan and design a new complex for 120 buses. WRA was part of the planning, concept design and final design effort for the new complex.

Design was difficult due to two major factors: 1) the site size could not be increased and the existing operation filled most of the site, and 2) the maintenance and fueling operations had to stay active. The design of the new complex incorporated “stacked” elements that included an employee and non-revenue vehicle parking structure over bus storage and facilities shops and a three-story administration and transportation building. Other site elements include the fleet maintenance facility, interior bus storage, CNG fuel islands, CNG compressor station and bus washer.
