MdQI awarded WRA with the 2019 MdQI Maryland Transportation Authority Award, Under $5 Million Substructure and Superstructure Repairs to Various Bridges on I-95, Statewide, MD.
The Maryland Transportation Authority issued a unique two-year contract to the successful low bidder Martins Construction Corporation from Falls Church, Virginia on January 8th, 2017. Martins Construction Corp. and its subcontractors, which consisted of 48% minority-owned businesses, answered the question, “How do we repair the 21 various bridges along I-95 in Baltimore and Harford Counties and stay under budget?”
The team reviewed all the numbers daily, increased the volume and productions and saved the owner several thousands of dollars by completing activities through various means and methods including building scaffolding, working extended hours, elimination of additional mobilizations, savings on traffic control, daily lane closures, and usage of snooper equipment to save the Authority and Contractor time and money. The project ended 4 months ahead of schedule, officially completing on September 20, 2018 and stayed under budget by $106.16.
The stakeholders established trust by ensuring open communication which allowed for increases in efficiency and a higher overall quality of work. From the very first “Project Kick-Off Meeting” and the subsequent progress meetings, we established a policy of open dialogue and transparency between all stakeholders. This was sustained by consistent milestone check-ins and daily communication via group text messages that provided field progress updates and pictures to inform all relevant personnel of any last-minute changes to the daily schedule. This kind of teamwork had a direct impact on the successful completion of additional work within the project, while staying under budget and minimizing incidental expenses for the contractor, ultimately benefiting all parties.
