East 26th Street Project Close to Completion.
Baltimore, MD – A little over a year ago, the century-old retaining wall located between the CSX Transportation railroad tracks and East 26th Street gave way, carrying part of the street and several cars down onto the tracks below.
Under an on-call contract with the Baltimore City Department of Transportation, WRA was called to respond to the emergency. WRA structural and geotechnical engineers were on site within 45 minutes of notification and remained there throughout the night, along with WRA surveyors. During the emergency phase of the project, WRA staff provided onsite support 12 hours a day, 7 days a week to complete the repairs as quickly as possible. In addition to this initial response, WRA’s work has included design of a final temporary work plan to initially stabilize the street and area in front of the houses, coordination of utility replacements, design and construction of the permanent concrete retaining wall, and street reconstruction.
Now, on the one year anniversary of the collapse, the street has been restored and the long term construction phase for permanent restoration of East 26th Street and the retaining wall is close to completion with final wall staining and landscaping taking place.
