Replace Campus Underground Utility Piping System. Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
A new underground chilled water system was designed to serve seven buildings on this nearly 100 year old campus.
A new underground chilled water and a medium temperature heating water system was designed, consisting of a network of sidewalks, grass areas, parking lots, roadways, and utilities. The majority of the trench layout was confined within existing macadam paving and sidewalks.
The total length of the cast-in-place concrete trench system was 2,100 feet, and the removable top slabs of the trenches were designed to resist AASHTO H-20 axle loading. The trenches cross numerous utility lines, and several utility crossings were routed through the trench. Thermal expansion was controlled with pipe anchors and expansion loops.
