Marine Engineering Presentation - WTS’s Transportation YOU Program.

Baltimore, MD – Pam Destino, a WRA Senior Project Engineer, recently presented a session on marine engineering to girls at Patterson High School in Baltimore City. The presentation included WRA’s involvement in marine infrastructure design for clients like the Navy and the private shipbuilding industry, as well as some of the smaller port projects WRA has worked on for the Maryland Port Administration (MPA). The session also involved a group exercise where the girls made “bulkheads” out of clay, pebbles, sand, wooden rods, and nails.

Pam is a mentor for WTS’s Transportation YOU program at Patterson High School.  WTS, an international organization dedicated to the professional advancement of women in transportation, started Transportation YOU as part of an outreach effort. Transportation YOU is a hands-on, interactive, mentoring program that offers young girls ages 13-18 an introduction to a wide variety of transportation careers. Through the program, WTS chapters work to make a difference in the lives of young girls by offering programs and activities that will spark their interest in all modes of transportation and encourage them to take courses in math, science, and technology.

The WTS Baltimore Chapter of Transportation YOU partnered with Patterson High School five years ago, and since then has been introducing the girls to the different modes of transportation in the state and what they have to offer in careers in the transportation industry. Each year, a different aspect of the industry has been highlighted, including the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA), and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA). This year, Transportation YOU is focused on ports and the MPA, and is currently planning a field trip in the spring time to the Port of Baltimore.
