Newport News Sewer Rehabilitation Featured in MASTT.

Newport News, VA - The Mid Atlantic Journal of Trenchless Technology (MASTT) featured WRA’s Locality Sewer Rehabilitation project for Hampton Roads Sanitation District / Newport News.

This is an Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) Pilot Design-Bid-Build Project to reduce Inflow and Infiltration (I/I) by 70% (target goal) in the City of Newport News Sewershed PS008 under the regional EPA/DEQ consent decree. Under the consent decree, HRSD is working cooperatively with thirteen of the Hampton Roads localities and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to develop a plan of action to study the regional sewer system to identify improvements that can be made to reduce the frequency and severity of I/I and sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). Each locality and HRSD will take specific actions over the next few years to develop a Regional Wet Weather Management Plan (RWWMP) to minimize SSOs.

The project primarily consisted installing 9,754 LF of Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) to rehabilitate 6 to 12 inch gravity sewer mains, 142 laterals repairs (94 by means of CIPP and replacement of 48), and rehabilitation of 42 manholes totaling 300 VLF.  WRA performed the condition assessment work in the central portion of the city from 2009 – 2012 and then provided the design and engineering services for this project.  The work was conducted from October 2015 through March 2016 by Tri-State Utilities, Basic Construction, D&S Contractors, and BLD.
