Indian River Inlet, SR-1 Slope Stabilization and Emergency Repairs. Sussex County, Delaware.

Hurricane Sandy destroyed protective sand dunes immediately north of Indian River Inlet and closed SR-1. WRA designed protection for the Indian River Inlet Bridge north approach.

Our design team visited the site and met with DelDOT. The project goal was to rapidly provide temporary protection from possible future storms to the north approach to the new Indian River Inlet Bridge before a more long term solution by beach replenishment. WRA reviewed the subsurface information from available boring logs and reports and used that data to develop a design profile for this project. The project solution was a 1,000-foot long steel sheet pile wall designed to resist surf scour and long term sea level rise. Most of the wall is tied-back with grouted bar anchors. We worked closely with DelDOT and their contractor to implement the wall design and construction, including installation of the sheet piles and drilling & testing of the tie-back anchors.
