DelDOT Indian River Bridge - Roadway Approaches. Sussex County, Delaware.

The project included the realigned roadway approaches to the new Indian River Inlet Bridge on SR 1, a major route to Delaware's beaches. The site lies on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Bay.

WRA reviewed the available subsurface and instrumentation data and managed supplemental subsurface investigation programs to analyze the stability of the recently placed retaining walls and reinforced slopes along the new SR 1 alignment. There was public and political concern because the measured approach embankment settlement and lateral movement was larger than expected. Recommendations were developed for the embankment removal contract implemented to improve the stability of the embankments and prevent additional lateral movement. The final design phase of the project included the innovative use of lightweight foamed concrete fill to balance the existing embankment loads on deep deposits of soft soils, reduce long term settlement and minimize/eliminate lateral earth pressures on the abutments for the structure on SR 1 over the Indian River Inlet.
