Alpha Ridge Landfill Gas-to-Energy System. Howard County, Maryland.

WR&A, in association with Cynergy Electric Company, and PEPCO Energy systems, as part of a design-build team, prepared the designs for a Landfill Gas-to-Energy System at the Alpha Ridge Landfill.

The system uses landfill gas as a fuel source to a 1 MW generator and delivers electrical power at 13.2 KV to the PJM grid. The project included stringent noise requirements of 55dBA at the property line of a very small site. During design, the need for an additional smaller capacity landfill gas extraction blower was identified and incorporated into the project. The design consisted of integrating an energy system into an existing landfill gas enclosed flare system. Because the engine/generator was sized for future landfill gas availability (declining availability), flare control modifications needed to be developed, which integrated flare operations with engine/generator operations, under various scenarios of landfill gas availability.
